Just looking for some input on this which I have been thinking about for quite a long time. This is a question mainly for folks in the US who use Scott for cataloging. This is like the old men's boxer or brief question ! I have created many approval books and sometimes I put the stamps in the approval book in Scott order - meaning the back of the book items are included after the regular issues. Sometimes I create the book in Minkus order meaning all of the stamps are included in year order with the back of the book items mixed with the regular issues. What do buyers looking at a book prefer ? I guess I create the books based on where they came from in the first place. I sometimes am breaking up a country that came from a Scott album and other times from a Minkus album. Does it matter or is there a preference ? Thanks, Steve

re: Scott or Minkus ?

It really doesn't matter that much but since I collect Poland and Russia in Minkus albums it would be a little easier for me if you used Minkus order for those two countries. But honestly it really doesn't make a huge difference so just go with what the majority want, which will probably be Scott's!

I collect mostly Latin America, and since many of those countries issued both domestic and airmail stamps in the same set it makes more sense to me not to split airmails into a different section, at least for those countries.

I just realized I posted this in the wrong thread. It was meant to be in Approvals Discussion not this thread. If it can be moved that is fine. Steve

re: Scott or Minkus ?

I use Minkus on my Germany, Italy, Belgium and Great Britain collections, for my USA and Canada I use Scott, I don't think I have ever seen any stamps listed using Minkus for sale on this site, I just use my Minkus catalog to cross reference. I do prefer the stamps listed as with the Minkus system, however I am a slave to my Scott National albums for my USA collection.

Some complain about Scott's policy to separate air mails and semi-postals from main section. For US. Minkus separates definitives and commemoratives.

I prefer Gibbons as they are listed in order of issue.

In their Stamps of the World catalogue Postage Dues are at the back of the country but in their country specialised catalogues Postage Dues are listed in the year they were issued in the main body of the catalogue.

In the end, you should use the catalog of your intended audience if you want to sell to them. Here Scott is predominant. I have never seen any material sold using Minkus anywhere in many years.

The only problem with Scott is that from the early 2000's they only put a value on complete sets. I then have to go to Gibbons.

re: Scott or Minkus ?

When I started this thread - I did not mean using the actual Minkus Catalog Numbers. Do they even make a Minkus Catalog anymore ? Anyway what I was getting at is if I have a collection that was in a Scott album - the Back of the Book issues are at the end following the regular issues. When I create an approval book - I just do the same with the back of the book stamps after the regular issues - so if I have a collection from a Minkus album they are mixed in with their issue year. So when I create an apporoval book from a Minkus collection - they get mixed in. I was wondering if I should pull them out and move them to the back of the approval book. It would be extra work to do so. That's what I was trying to get some opinions on - seems like so far no one really cares ! Thanks, Steve
