Text Formatting in the Stamporama Message System

This cheatsheet is intended as a quick reference user guide for adding formatting to the messages that you send using the Stamporama Message system. In this document you will see how to make a word or phrase bold, emphasise it with italics, create numbered (or unumbered) bullet points, add links to Stamporama pages or other websites, add Quotes to clarify what you are messaging about, display images, and add headings if you have a need to do so.

You can also now use Emojis in your messages.  See the Emojis section below for instructions on using Emojis.

Please note: If you don't want to format the message that you are sending you don't have to. The message system will continue to work in the same way that it always has.

Make a Word or Phrase Bold

To make a word or a phase Bold you place 2 "*" characters before and 2 "*" characters after the word or phase that you would like to bolden.  A code example is:

This is how you make **something** bold.

And it will display as:

This is how you make something bold.

Emphasise using Italics

To emphasise a word or a phase using italics you place 1 "*" character before and 1 "*" character after the word or phase that you would like to emphasise.  A code example is:

This is how you use *italics* to emphasise a word or a phrase.

And it will display as:

Bullet Points

Ordered Bullet Points

Ordered Bullet Points, i.e. bullet points that start with a number are written as per the following:

1.  This is the first bullet point
2.  And this is the second bullet point.

They are displayed indented as follows:

  1.  This is the first bullet point
  2.  And this is the second bullet point.

Unordered Bullet Points

Unordered Bullet Points, bullet points that are not numbered, use a "*" or "-" character to start the point, as per the following:

*  This is the first point
*  And this is the second point.

The Unordered Bullet Points are displayed as per:

  • This is the first point

  • And this is the second point.

Links

There are two ways to create Links. The first and easiest is to just add angle brackets around the URL, as per the following:

If will display as per the following:

https://stamporama.com

The second way of handling links is a little more elaborate but gives the ability to create the link in written form with the URL executing behind the scenes when you click on the link.  It is written as per the following, with the written form surrounded by square brackets "[ ]" and the URL surrounded by round brackets "( )":

[This is the link to Stamporama](https://stamporama.com)

It will display as per the following:

This is the link to Stamporama

Quotes

Quotes are very simple in that they start with a ">" character as per the following:

> This is a very long line that will still be quoted properly when it wraps. Oh boy let's keep writing to make sure this is long enough to actually wrap for everyone. Oh, you can *put* **Markdown** into a quote.

It is displayed as per the following:

This is a very long line that will still be quoted properly when it wraps. Oh boy let's keep writing to make sure this is long enough to actually wrap for everyone. Oh, you can put Markdown into a blockquote.

Display Images

The image display markdown code is very similar to the second way of doing a link (see above) that allows a written form in the link.  To display an image the code starts with "!", then has a set of square brackets "[ ]" and then has the reference to the image file surrounded by round brackets "( )". If you have uploaded the image file to the Stamporama server, just use the "Copy to Clipboard" button so that you can easily past the image file name between the round brackets as per the following:

![ ](/upload/3001552843.jpeg)

If you are hosting the image file somewhere other than the Stamporama server you will have to include the whole URL, including the "Https://", between the round brackets.

The image file will display as per the following:

Headings

The following are code examples for creating level 1 thru 3 Headings. Note that for a level 1 heading you start the line with "# " - an "#" plus a space " ". For a level 2 heading, you start the line with 2 "#" characters plus a space " ", etc.  So the number of "#" characters that you use indicates the level number of the heading that you are creating.

# Heading Level 1

## This is a level 2 Heading

### This is a level 3 Heading

The heading will display as per the following in the SOR Messages:

Heading Level 1

This is a level 2 Heading

This is a level 3 Heading

Using Emojis in your Messages

You can now use the same Emojis in your messages that are used in the Discussion Board.  The Message system uses the Markdown code in the message but you can also use the short-code that is used in the Discussion Board.  See the table below for both codes.

The markdown codes used in the Message system are all in the format "" to display the Emoji image.  The Short-Code will be in format ":)" or ":-)" to display the Happy Emoji image.  See the table below for details.
